BVA313 Art theory - final thoughts on 2019 As year three comes to an end for BVA313 it is good to reflect on the year's journey through Theoretical Discourse - Sometimes I think it was difficult to separate  Theory from History and Research, I think all three cross over as it covers one project for the year. It has been great to find art theorists that have written about Creative Play and practice-base research.  Traditional theorists such as Carl Jung and Marcel Duchamp have also been cited.  I had to ask constantly - "Who is writing about art?"  The list of references has been collected over the past two years - theories on collecting, creative play, material objects, exploring issues about heroes and fantasy or fantastic art.  Tango Mango and the Poogies explored a make believe world with  themes of fantastic art, story-telling and visual narratives.  The ideas for these characters form a body of work that can be taken further to a pu...

Exhibition installation completed Venue Invercargill Public Library, 50 Dee Street, Invercargill I experienced some unexpected issues when installing, the space was smaller than I had realised so I thought how best to make the space a diorama within  a diorama. There was a large television screen on the back wall so I abandoned the idea of a painted backdrop and pinned black velvety fabric over it and re-pinned the black cloths that were there.  I used the lighting provided, after testing fairy lights it just looked too busy.  The focus is on the characters within the space, and the three spotlights were adequate to light them up. I could only fit two suitcases for the diorama case, it looks visually interesting with some of the characters placed around it.  This overcame the fact I couldn’t fit in the bookcases. I placed violet velvety fabric on the floor and scattered with fake jewels to give a magical aesthetic.  The feature heroic character of T...

BVA303 Research 17/10/19

Abstract for dissertation 200 Words Abstract goes before the introduction 1. Question 2. Outline project 3. Methodology 4. findings email to bex.pilley@sit.ac.nz Abstract example from creative media research https://www.creativemediaresearch.org/post/the-femme-fatale-and-the-female-screenwriter-disrupting-the-stereotype ‘I am back, you bastards’, declares Tilly (Kate Winslet). She smokes a cigarette and wears an evocative white cartwheel hat in the dead of night. This is the opening line of the film The Dressmaker (2015) written and directed by the Australian filmmaker Jocelyn Moorhouse, based on the 2000 novel of the same name by Rosalie Ham. With a mixture of spaghetti western, noir, comedy and drama genre elements, this film recreates the archetype of the femme fatale with a depth rarely seen in such characters. What also makes Tilly ground-breaking is the fact that she is the protagonist of the story, and instead of luring men, she lures the ...

BVA316 Studio Practice 16/10/19 Intuitive creative play  and some anecdotal thoughts that lead me on the journey towards my degree.    Penny's  Pony Ride - starting with a wooden jewelry mannequin I added a small porcelain dolls head and its arms and legs - the arms became the merry go round - and I tried a few different hair pieces - just for fun. I was exploring found materials for a carousel - I ended up making a bigger piece with a cake turner and created a more recognizable merry go round for exhibition two.     Penny's  Pony Ride was discarded as it didn't fit with the overall project theme but serves as a creative play example. preparing work for exhibition two. The Carousel Trap - exhibition two  In creating artwork I think about how I create art, often with little or limited planning I work with materials and see what might work or an idea springs to mind what to try out...

BVA313& BVA316 Melbourne 2019 Street Art

Melbourne Street Art - Exploring the Laneways Street art was interesting as a site to display art work - the reception of viewers would be interesting to observe at one site for an hour or two .  The laneways are really outdoor gallery sites, free to view. 'Mosaic Man' - Sankar Nadeson -  A selection of street art I found in the laneways and streets of Melbourne . The semi-permanent nature of some of the work means that fresh work can be added to create a living Gallery for everyone to see.   My husband Dave showing the scale of the work - he is 6ft 2" and dwarfed by the art work. decaying poster - the temporary nature of art left to face the elements  Sometimes you need to look closely to find art - someone has nailed a tin to a piece of wood on a wall  PAX gaming festival sign  Sculpture on an outside wall using natural objects and altering and adding to create an outdoor installation Tags over graffit...

Art theory - 10/10/19 Banksy Dismaland -Film on YouTube What do I think about this type of art?  Reactions Reactionary Art The atmosphere - depressing view on society - also like an fun fair - ruining childhood memories! Installations, portraits  (reverse) challenges assumptions - an artist was painting portrait commissions -but she only painted - https://www.we-heart.com/2015/08/20/banksy-dismaland-bemusement-park/ “The following are strictly prohibited in the Park – spray paint, marker pens, knives and legal representatives of the Walt Disney Corporation.” The wry anti-corporation humour is back; in his first major event since New York takeover  Better Out Than In , the world’s most infamous street artist returns, with a little help from his friends. Damien Hirst; Jimmy Cauty; Paul Insect & BAST; Block9; Jenny Holzer; Axel Void; just some of the big-hitting names — spanning street art, conceptual art and set design — who are helping Bristol’s ...

The Hellenic Museum, Melbourne - Art History October 2019 A selection of images from my visit to the Hellenic Museum - William Street, Melbourne Central https://www.hellenic.org.au/ THE MESSENGER artist: SAM JINKS blob:https://vod-server.wix.com/3b332a72-c960-448d-8adb-b2051055498f The Messenger a spectacular new work by internationally lauded artist Sam Jinks. The sculpture is inspired by a statue of the Greek goddess Iris from the west pediment of the Parthenon (now in the British Museum). Sam Jinks' commission was made possible by the support of the Victorian Government and philanthropists Peter and Mary Mitrakas. It was produced as part of a cross cultural partnership between the Hellenic Museum and the Benaki Museum, Athens. The Messenger is the second major art commission by the Hellenic Museum and follows the unique ONEIROI installation by artist Bill Henson which also inspired dialogue between the aesthetics of the ancient past and today. https://bus...
