Exhibition installation completed
Venue Invercargill Public Library, 50 Dee Street, Invercargill

I experienced some unexpected issues when installing, the space was smaller than I had realised so I thought how best to make the space a diorama within  a diorama.

There was a large television screen on the back wall so I abandoned the idea of a painted backdrop and pinned black velvety fabric over it and re-pinned the black cloths that were there.  I used the lighting provided, after testing fairy lights it just looked too busy.  The focus is on the characters within the space, and the three spotlights were adequate to light them up.

I could only fit two suitcases for the diorama case, it looks visually interesting with some of the characters placed around it.  This overcame the fact I couldn’t fit in the bookcases.

I placed violet velvety fabric on the floor and scattered with fake jewels to give a magical aesthetic.  The feature heroic character of Tango Mango sits in the middle of the space , to her right sits the villainous character of Vera the Villain.  Underneath them, cheeky dogs are gathered with Victor Barco waving his fist up at Tango’s monument.

Within Tango Mango sits a two level diorama where little Poogies safely inhabit the spaces.

I had a couple of damages transporting all the little characters, my fault as I did not pack them carefully enough.  The whole installation is portable and can be reconfigured anyway I choose depending on the space.  I have control over this and would be hesitant to let a curator set it up if they didn’t understand the story and ideas behind my work.  Creative play has featured throughout this project, right to the final installation.  I worked alone installing the work as I wanted the work to be part of the whole experience of idea, to creation and final exhibition.

I think the project has been a success, utterly joyful and exhausting at times.  Sometimes frustrating with material that wouldn’t stick together, mistakes in firing oven clays (not mixed properly or undercooked). Trying to keep a consistent set of characters was not easy.  The best and most successful character was Tango Mango, I could draw and recreate her in several scales and with a mix of materials.  The large scale mannequin with her head made from plaster cloth, sponge and paper mache was a culmination of an idea that I was unsure would be successful.  It came together after many creative play hours at home and in the studio.

The stacked cases with Poogies, and story characters including a magic doorway book.
