School Holiday Post 16 July 2020

16 July 2020

things have been a bit quiet during the break but I am still creating and making.

Catlin's Bush Fairy

As a side project, a break from my project work and having some clay that needed using I made a little diorama scene with a fairy character.  I don't really go for those sugary type fairy creatures all pink and cute.  This little chap is of the New Zealand bush.
I have documented the process for reference.  Wire armature not done the normal way, pieces were connected with skewers and pieces of wire then the wing frames added.  The wing frames gave stability and made the posing easier.  The body is all clay without bulking material such as foil, this was because of the small size and time to bake estimated 135 degrees C for half an hour.

As per the photos I began with a bust and built from there, I wanted the fairy to have character so made him look ancient and to be unique I added side burns and a series of plats in his hair.  Two little leaf embellishments added to help cover fabric ends.

Painting was done with acrylics and blended with gold to give the body an ancient aesthetic.
The wings were covered with fabric and wool yarn attached with glue.

I made the diorama box from scratch, balsa pieces, hessian fabric, collected stones, sticks and shell.  The tiny saw was an embellishment I had spare - to help make the viewer a visual story.  The foliage and ground coverings are flock for scenery building eg railway scenes.

This is the finished piece - less the mirror tiles that didn't work.

Inspiration for the piece was watching BFG recently and the style of the giants face. I'll probably give this for a gift to someone.

with mirror tiles - not liking the effect - looks tacky.

Card making - a thank you card for a donated commission - pen, pencil and collages technique.
Each card I make I try and have something special for the recipient - in this case the person had a Belgium Shepherd and a Cairn Terrier.- she loves colorful gardens and music so the back-sheet was chosen for this reason.

finished card - collage and illustration.

test card - used the top dog and made another card - wasn't happy with the layout or terrier at the bottom

Birthday card for my sister - a farmer in Hawkes Bay.  Painted this one and finished in liner pen to my usual illustrative style.  Sealed with mod podge matt - didn't like the finish but couldn't go back once done!
