Portfolio and Proposal for further study in 2020

Portfolio and Proposal

Proposal for study

After completing three years and achieving my Bachelor of Visual Arts I would like to take my third year project to another level and explore the possibilities of trans media platforms to develop and animate a character based on one of the static ones produced.  There had been a backstory for Tango Mango and the Poogies but had never been formally written down.  I have been working on this over the summer as it could form the basis for a published book and in digital format or as an interactive book for all ages.
Animation would take the form of stop motion from a handmade character and settings.  I would like to try a combination of puppet animation and cut-out animation to form a short film.

Creative play formed a major component of my study in 2019, I would also like to use this as a way to solve problems and assist the creative process of my work.  I am keen on using basic equipment that is available to everyone such as an iPhone or iPad and my own Canon DSLR camera.  SIT would hopefully  be able to provide suitable software,  studio space and technical advice where needed as I do not really have a suitable space at home to set up and leave for filming.  I used editing software in year one and two to create simple animations so have some basic knowledge.

I would also like to explore the idea of a board game based on my story, this would really make the project a true trans media experience.  I am not yet sure how I will do this, but would like it to be handmade.

I envisage being able to project a short film accompanied by characters, a book and a game.  This would help establish my brand and explore what can be exhibited to the public in a gallery space either traditional or non traditional.

I intend to continue working each Wednesday afternoon at the Activity Centre for 2.5 hours a week.  The staff commented that the children enjoyed my activities during the year so I think if I can make a small difference in their personal journey I would like to carry on.

I have included a selection of images from my body of work - relevant to the project.  I have included a couple of short films I made, one stop motion with my canon camera  and one freelance taken from my iphone and edited through Adobe Premiere.

My first attempt at polymer clay figures in 2017 - used in the graphic novel Harvey Bramble - The Bramble Brothers first adventure.

Reuben Bramble the Hipster bunny - the Bramble Brothers

First fantastic character - bronzed painted polymer clay - Johnny Zulu the Pirate Hare from Havana - a character I would like to develop further.  Year two Theory class project.

First year final exhibition - The Journey - I used anthropomorphic characters to represent my ancestors voyage to New Zealand

The storyteller - a simple wire figure wrapped in yarn and silk

comic book characters from Harvey Bramble

Painted fabric book - another attempt at a visual story from year two Theory

from painting in year two - pop art - the idea for the dog and rabbit which became Tango and Pickles and one I will develop further.

Victor Barco the villain, altered doll and polymer clay head

The Muse - not really a villain, he's far too sweet to be bad.

Altered Barbie doll and polymer head - one of the pirate dogs set.

small back drop - I enjoy silhouette work and would like to use it in my project.

another two altered dolls - polymer heads - just ugly, not really scary.

Two Poogies in exhibition two 2019

Pirate dogs in exhibition one 2019

Pickles Poogie the central Poogie character

backdrop used in exhibition two - creating a dystopian, damaged environment

small Tango - with blurb for audience to understand story

Luring in the Poogies - this character was a bit strange, he didn't really fit the pirate image - but did have that carnival person persona.

The carousel trap - on cake stand - made from found objects

Trying to get the message across about environmental issues proved illusive and was later abandoned.

Illustration for Tango - a new type of superhero

Tango in various scale - this was the realization that she could make a great stop motion puppet.

smallest scale Tango and two little Poogies - made to see what would fit into suitcase dioramas and other small spaces

Pickle's playhouse - handmade from leftover balsa and found objects

making the onesie for Pickles to connect to a contemporary audience

Vera the villan - part of the final exhibition 2019

plaster cloth on wire armature exploration - not used in any exhibition this character was made at the Activity Centre to show students what could be made with simple materials

2017 - one of the first polymer clay heads made for an armature, a favorite piece from end of year final exhibition.

use of air dried clay - I did not like the finished results, it was difficult to work with.

2017 polymer characters all made using polymer and air clay over jewelry mannequins sourced from charity shops - this was the beginning of my love for visual storytelling and figurative sculpture - anthropomorphic animals have been a theme over the three years.

Final exhibition 2019

Poster - hand painted then edited digitally to make a poster - not used in the final work.
