 Artist's Statement

Artist Statement | Exhibition Three

  • Artist’s Name: Lucy Murdoch
  • Programme: Bachelor of Visual Arts
  • Year: Three
  • Title: Tango Mango and The Poogies – Exploring the visual narrative  through assemblage
  • Medium: Assemblage | Mixed Media

Research Question:
Through the mediums of assemblage sculpture, dioramas and illustrative drawings how can I create a visual narrative that incorporates creative play?

I have produced a diorama styled assemblage to create a visual narrative and in this third exhibition I hope the viewer will enjoy visiting the world of Tango Mango and the Poogies.

Through practice based research as my methodology I use creative play and an exploratory approach to discover and test my work to create fun and cheerful characters in unusual settings.  My creative practice lies somewhere between art and craft, my materials are very varied and flexible using new, used and repurposed objects.  I have inconstant scales and apply   anthropomorphic characters  and  bright colours in the work to give an emphasis to the fantastical art elements and the magic of the visual narratives in my practice.
Historical influences include Joseph Cornell 1903-1972 (USA) and Marc Giai-Miniet 1946-(France) who are artists who worked with dioramas and shadowboxes. Theorist Stephen Nachmanovitch’s book on Free Play has been inspiring.

In exhibition three the dog figure Tango Mango is the heroic character and  her mannequin creates a safe diorama  place for Poogies to reside in – she is their liberator from Victor Barco and his dog posse.   The headpiece serves as a playful monument as an iconic figure.  The suitcase is a secondary diorama setting for Pickles Poogie and his playhouse – easily carried to safety by Tango.  The story of Tango Mango and the Poogies has the capacity to be developed into a storybook and towards the creation of a stop motion animation in the future.

An artist's statement is a written document that introduces you as an artist. It explains why and how you make your art, along with other facts about you and your art. An artist's statement could be about a particular work or your entire body of work.
Many applications for awards, grants, fellowships, schools or jobs require an artist's statement.
Artist's statements typically contain:
  • A few sentences on your personal relationship with art in general as well as why you do what you do.
  • Your medium: paint, clay whatever. Why that's the right medium for you. Your favorite canvas size, tools you use. Does anyone assist you?
  • Your current work: why you depicted whatever, if you work in more than one medium why you chose the medium for a particular work. What it means to you. What you hope it means for anyone looking at your work.

  • choose the right platform

  • Kickstarter

Budgets

What to charge participants?

Do I have to pay anyone any reimbursements for their time?  Not for my workshop especially one held while I am still a student at SIT.  I am not charging for my time.
Travel - N/A own vehicle at own cost
Equipment  - unknown, but probably not needed to be listed as I am using a room at SIT - the project is assemblage so equipment is part of supplies  - access to a first aid kit would be important.  Find out what the hireage of the room costs.
Supplies -
Hot glue gun & glue sticks - two would be ideal so more than one at a time can use.
Paper towels and wet wipes for cleaning up
pva and tacky glue
paper - A4 and A3
card - mix of colours
double sided tape
sellotape
markers and pencils
paints and brushes
paper clay
own stash of objects and spare bits to share and use - a great way to use excess items I have sourced throughout the year.

In-Kind Contributions
In-kind contributions are goods or services donated to the organization. These services/contributions can often be used as matching funds by many funding sources. Examples of gifts-in-kind include:
  • corporate volunteers and pro-bono professional services - does Kathryn come under this banner?
  • use of a building and utilities ; find out cost of room hireage
  • advertising  - Kathryn to assist with promotion of activity
  • donation of computers, or other tech resources
  • transportation

Definitions:

Assemblage is an artistic process in which a three-dimensional artistic composition is made from putting together found objects.
shrinen.  A container or receptacle for sacred relics; a reliquary.  For artists, shrines and assemblages are generally sculptures incorporating found objects. A shrine might be for sacred objects, or for the celebration of a theme or idea close to the artist's heart.

The artist holds classes over three weeks - my initial class will be on one day - make and take style art.

Class Plan:

First Week
  • Meet the class
  • Brief history of assemblage art - exploring different styles
  • Preparing your box or form
  • Working with 3-D space
  • Foraging for materials
  • Thinking in layers
  • Experimentation with overall design
  • Defining subject and feel
  • Background layer 1
At home:  Continue to gather elements.  Refine and size photos and text.  Stay in relationship to your piece.
Second Week
  • Preparing core internal elements
  • Adding background layer 2/3
  • A primer on glues
  • Refining design – editing and integrating
At home:  Keep visiting with your piece, see what interesting elements float through your world. Stay in relationship to your piece.
Third Week
  • Add background layer 3/4 (as needed)
  • Attaching core elements
  • Embellishment options
  • Varnishing/Finishing
  • Tour of works
lets see what you believe.JPG
I can see it would be useful to bring old books to deconstruct - this artist has an excellent work plan and no doubt has a great following of keen creatives to attend.
