Question: Slice for Theory
Centered around Production,Authorship and Reception:
For the handmade and reassembled objects how is the best method to present to an audience? Why is a diorama a suitable style to display assemblage and handmade objects?
Production of my work - the making of assemblage art and display of work
The figures and characters I make could be formally displayed on a traditional gallery plinth or a set of shelves, a cabinet of curiosities or in a suitcase - the diorama is a museum styled setting that suits my work, I found that in the history of diorama the suitcase is a method to display - this suits my work as the case forms part of the assemblage work and also contains memory or nostalgia. Suitable also for the aspect of play and creativity processes involved in my work.
While searching for Key Words for my project I find the term Fluxus appealing for the fact that it has strong links to the Dada Movement and sits outside of the normal realms of fine art, as does my own practice. The collections and how the artists compose of curate the objects is immensely interesting - I think that a slice of this idea can be useful for my Theory requirements - I don't intend to collaborate my work as such but I do need to acknowledge where the objects have come from if they are donated.
Nam June Paik's practice was using every day objects and assembling them to make more than just abstract works of art. This artist worked with film and objects incorporating compilations of video footage with the work. This is a very interesting concept I would like to explore to give my work more life. An idea to incorporate an assemblage piece accompanied by video or film is something I would like to work towards. My keywords of Play and Nostalgia can work together. The diorama like setting gives a museum feel to my work, of memories and childhood objects to create a small magical world. The use of a suitcase serves as a metaphor for travelling through time, a life journey, and an interesting setting for a miniature scene. The idea of the mannequin protecting or guarding the Poogies in the suitcase is a way to tell a story. It is not necessary that the work is portable it is just a different way to display my work.
Site is important and should be a key component of my third and fourth exhibitions. Exhibition three will be at the Raw Gallery to test my work and see what needs fine tuning, adding to or deleting or altering for the final exhibition. Install 5 September 2019.
I have secured a place in the Invercargill City Library on Dee Street, they have allocated the Car Park Display Cabinet for my work and this is exciting as I get to place my work within a more public space as it has foot traffic for the library and shoppers passing through. Install 24/10/19 De-install 9 November 2019.
