BVA313 BVA316 Artist Statement for 21 June 2019 Exhibition
Artist Statement
Artist’s Name: Lucy Murdoch
Programme: Bachelor of Visual
Arts
Year: Three
Title: “What’s for dinner?” a
cautionary tale about greed and plastic pollution.
Medium: Assemblage | Mixed
Media | Diorama
Research Question:
Through the mediums of assemblage
sculpture and illustrative drawings how can I create a visual story
using anthropomorphic fantasy characters and incorporate awareness of
plastic pollution?
The production and assemblage
of the story characters and presenting them in a scene so the viewer can read a
story and receive a message about environmental issues or raising awareness through
story. Using the characters created for the story
Victor Barco and the Poogie Hunters I have taken a story chapter and presented
them in a way which should be read from left to right.
Craft vs art practice -
looking back at materials and play - inventiveness - collecting practice -
Scale - museum practice - site choices - inconstant scale -
fantastical elements - found object.
Contemporary practitioners
who have influenced or inspired my work are film director Wes Anderson’s stop
motion animation “Isle of Dogs” (2018).
Mike Batt’s “The Wombles’ from the 1970s and the art of Jim Doran (USA)
creator or dioramas. I am constantly discovering
new artists and creatives that support my practice.
Historical influences from
the art of Hieronymus Bosch who painted the tryptic ‘The Garden of Earthly
Delights’ circa 1510. 20th
Century artist Marc Chagall which included strong narratives and dream like themes in works such as ‘I and
the Village’. Artist Arthur Rackham’s illustrations are a continuous source of
inspiration for the fairy tale and book illustrations.
The theoretical debate I am
investigating is a slice of my main project.
“How does the moment of discovery associated with the found object
inform art making processes?” This slice of my main project has been an
interesting and informative addition to my practice, to understand why we
collect and hold value in certain objects.
The use creative research methodology
and a heuristic approach is how I
discover through an original investigation, which is undertaken in order to gain
new knowledge. As an intuitive artist I often
do not plan much but follow my instincts around the idea I have. Recording the results in my blog and
reviewing what was successful and what needs to be improved or discarded. One of the main issues I face is only being
able to create one character and not repeat for another scene. The idea of casting multiple copies is one
solution.
In this exhibition my
characters are presented in a diorama styled story setting for the viewer to
read, the addition of a book with artwork should assist the viewer if they wish
to find out more.
