Authenticity of Art

Art is globally at $50 Billion a year

Fakes - estimated to be at 30%   - lack of documentation and research means it is easy to slip into the market.  Supposed to controlled by Art Authenticators.  A very secretive world.

How are artworks analysed/  knowing everything about the artist - then scientific analysis - DNA - multispectral imaging.

lacks regulation in the industry.

Van Gogh art has a lot of fakes on the market.  This fake has circulated for 100 plus years.  Declared fakes but then in 2011 - changed minds to state it is real.  X-rays can help identity fakes.

Evaluate all the players

Authenticators -
Museums -
Auctioneers  - want to make profit, not interested in authenticity.
Insurance -
Art Critics -

What are their motives for their findings?

Artwork 'Fourteen Sunflowers'  Van Gogh - was it real or fake?  There were doubts - picture was 'muddy' - not clean like Van Gogh's work.   Fakes were made shortly after his death and got confused which were real and which were fake.  Museum and sale rooms hide behind confidentiality clauses.

The subjects were often repeated - the Asuna fake was not mentioned nor is it signed.   It hung alongside the original and was obviously not real.

Letters written by Vincent to his brother Theo - his art dealer - accompanied artworks - are important when authenticating potential fakes.   Vincent's siter n law Johanna inherited all of his paintings and documentation that was kept by Theo - both Vincent and then Theo six months later committed suicide.
Schufunnecker - suspected as fake painter - bitter at lack of recognition.

3 ways to find if a painting/artwork is real

Visual comparison
Documentary evidence
Scientific tests

Interesting fact:  sunflowers are used in the production of painters turpentine.

For Van Gogh - The Sunflower and Symbolic association with yellow - life giving , sun, love gratitude , symbol of life and friendship.  Spiritual and artistic reasons.
