BVA316 Studio Projects 30 May 2019

30 MAY 2019

Ideas for exhibition -

use boxes as dioramas - second set arrived and need to be put together.  I can use 6 or 8 with a character and backdrop in each -

On the top add plate with text - (done)   then scaled houses made from cardboard - paint black so they do not detract from the figures.

All characters for the second exhibition will be made from wire armatures and polymer clay (as opposed to the combination of polymer clay and dolls bodies used in exhibition one)

Talked about the use of outcomes from the bookmaking workshop on 1 June with Sam Chandler.  These books could be useful for the exhibition as a way for the viewer to read the story - suggested one should be blank with a cover and title (tell own story) and one should contain cover and images and some text inside.

Make drawings to include character bios and some story without text.  Look at authors such as Shaun Tan who produces wordless books - Tan is included as a practitioner in earlier posts.

Looking at shifting studios - the smell of oils, chemicals (TURPS)   and crowded nature of the Transition Gallery has become unbearable and unhealthy to work in - the room is also cold - Kathryn suggested to move into Rm 101 - they will be taking away the screen printing equipment (to another room) so I will have plenty of space to work and store materials that won't be disturbed.

A dog tribe member - in the making - wire and foil armature - of a larger scale - to be crawling along in an attempt to capture  a Poogie from the carousel.  It has been a challenge to get the pose right - I am awaiting more clay to finish and bake - Scale varies to support the fantastical nature of the project - my work is not intended to be a static display of uniform figures.

to be added to the top of the exhibition #2

Paddy Poogie - the Irish Swamp Poogie joins the Poogie crew to clean up rubbish - wire armature and polymer clay - painted and covered with green dyed calf hair (really is!)  found object in my fishing fly tying supplies.
Backdrops are found scrapbook papers from a mart.

Parsley and Pickles Poogies - - they are gazing at the audience - something to engage the viewer - Parsley is polymer clay with wire armature and coated in paint then applied flock - gives him an earthly look.  Pickles is a feature Poogie who will engage with Tango the dog - special detail has been added to make him a onesie that Tango has made for him as a partial disguise (some of his fur still shows at the cuffs and collar)  - they will be shown separately.

Dog tribe members - still working on the aesthetic of these - one has a doll armature the other is made from wire and polymer clay  - clothing is up-cycled, remade and from a small porcelain doll.  Green head is made from applying flock.  this adds to the fantasy character aesthetic - she might have come from a swamp.......the right hand figure is topped with feather marabou, she was to be Tango the good dog but is just too ugly - so she gets to be Echo Echo - a type of Mexican street dog.  I will re- make the green headed dog with a wire and polymer body for uniformity of materials

The Muse - a dog called Whiskey - the body is polymer clay and added paint in bronze and black (that iconic aesthetic) and made grey pants and a cape - the key is a symbol for his connection to the universal language of humor.

A magical ride for the carnival/theme park, found objects - tin, castors, birds head, fur - needs more work and a character added.  I intend to add more carnival attractions - might be for next exhibition........Note the scale again doesn't correspond to the carousel | merry-go-round

wire armature for Echo Echo

Next steps - complete figures, paint scenery for dioramas - make up diorama box - blog about progress regularly - read supporting texts both technical and theoretical as well as historical (especially Fantasy art genre)
Tidy up studio and remove materials that are not going to be used.
Draw and create artwork for books.
