BVA316 One on Ones - Studio Projects

Meeting notes:
28/3/19

  • Discussed artists as collectors - useful for Theory side project or slice.  Asked Kathryn for advice on a key question for Theory -

  • How does the moment of discovery associated with the found object inform art making practices?  This question will address the aspect of the joy of making and creating without a predetermined outcome.
  • How do the found objects inform the conceptual development of art making?
  • See artists Patrick Pound the photo collector and Don Driver.  See if I can find artists who are collectors as well.  An assumption is that every assemblage or collage style artist will be a collector to some level.
  • I have been looking at the cabinet and trying out hanging cages with a few characters - it could work well as opposed to adding shelves for the second exhibition as the story builds.
  • (Comment - after tidying the cabinet up, removing the book and other items from the top and viewing what someone will see I will get a shelf made and give the display two levels - the cabinet is purely a means of locale to display - it is not necessary for the project as this stage.)
  • Every item that is installed must have a meaning and reason for being there, I won't have anything as window dressing or for effect.  Record ideas even if an item added is metaphorical or symbolic.  See what other artists are doing in contemporary assemblage and installations.
  • Artist statement is a one pager - use mapping exercise for basis of information.
  • I am yet to have a go on Photoshop to design a poster, I'm  not sure if I need one or not? (Comment - after a discussion with Kathryn I agreed that to make a handmade poster will keep to the overall theme of the project)
  • Check movie posters and theater posters for inspiration and layout techniques.

Work completed this week...... Gathered materials and trying flock to create a fur for a dog, first test on a air dried clay figure that was not very stable, results are interesting.  To develop a personality for each dog I want them to look unique, unfamiliar and new to the viewer.

Practice based research methodology

Assemblage Testing

materials -

  • wooden armature mannequin - decorative item
  • porcelain doll
  • silk fibre
  • 2 plastic horses
  • felt
  • jewelry cord
  • felt
  • wool
  • tea candle burner
  • plastic octopus
  • paper fasteners
  • glue gun for securing

The idea is that in the story and chapter in the amusement park , Victor and his Tribe have reconstructed some amusement rides - not all the parts were usable so they had to substitute - the alien human doll will be unfamiliar to the Poogies as they exist long after humans have exited their world - to them she might resemble a god or deity.
Dolls clothing to be used on one of the Tribe - a decoy dog, Whiskey the Muse, at the carnival will dress up in disguise so the Poogies won't recognise him.

Method - exercise in assemblage art, testing an environmentally sustainable approach.

All parts were either found, recycled, from a mart or on hand - no new materials were used

Deconstructed porcelain doll -
Kept the head, removed the hair, kept the hands and legs.  Added these to the mini mannequin, arms outwards and legs in a running position so the doll forms a carousel.
The two plastic horses were attached to look like carousel horses, complete with saddles, bridles and foot rests.
Unsure of what to do with the dolls head I tried a series of items which I recorded, the best being the blue hair and braids made from silk fibre.  The octopus, lizard and stars all had merit as they need to attract the Poogies, and I want a sense of the macabre in this piece as it is ultimately intended to be a trap.
It is interesting how the head treatments make an aesthetic difference - the bare dolls head was just too disturbing and was leading to a horror or dark carnival feel.

joining the limbs, glue gun tried for first time as I usually use glue.
horses added to see if they could look like a carousel .  Lizard added for photo, not sure if I like the addition of it or not.

embellishment ideas - not using beads

side view

back view

star hat, not using this - although it could have signage added......more thoughts

lizard on top - its yellow colour does balance with the horses, makes a more harmonious colour palette, this is not an important factor, just an observation.

octopus added, more of a spectacle and macabre effect.  This might scare the Poogies away

This one is my choice at the moment to develop further - Poogies are attracted to bright colours and shiny things
I will add to the horses to achieve this and consider a ladder or steps to climb onto the them.
